Activities and Groups

There’s something for everyone at

Kinver Community Library

Craft Workshops with Gilly Page

New and exciting Craft Workshops will be introduced to the Library, starting in February half-term. Gilly Page has successfully developed enjoyable Adult and Children’s Craft Workshops across the West Midlands and her talents will be very welcome at Kinver Library. Gilly will be making a charge of £5 per participant for each workshop, which will be held in most of the school holidays.

Gilly will supply materials to create exciting designs for festivals and presents.
The next workshop will be on Friday 23rd February from 10.00am until 12 noon, and the theme is Scrapbooking. It’s suitable for both girls and boys of Primary School age but older children are also welcome.

Outreach Sessions for People Living with Sight Loss

The Beacon Centre for the Blind will be running an outreach service at Kinver Community Library starting on Thursday 2nd February, 10.00 – 12.00, then at the same time on the first Thursday of each month.

Helpful specialist support on offer will include: Vision assessment; Low vision strategies; How to gain employment with vision impairment; How to gain independence despite vision impairment; Use of technology; Sight awareness training.

Art Exhibitions including Pictures or Photographs for Sale

Calling all local artists and photographers!

We would like to brighten the library and your day with a permanent exhibition of paintings and photographs.

Please therefore bring in your artistic masterpieces in early January 2017 and display it on our notice boards for free, with tags of expected prices if the items are for sale.

Our only proviso is that should we sell your work, the Library receives 10% of the proceeds. Marie Roberts will be the organiser of these displays and be your point of contact.

Tiny Tots

We currently offer “Baby Bounce and Rhyme” on Fridays from 2.15 – 2.45pm. It’s a time for parents and their little ones to enjoy nursery rhymes and songs, with the occasional addition of musical instruments. Leader Sue Finucane runs a reward system, whereby participants get a sticker each time they attend, and earning four stickers leads to the presentation of a certificate! A great way to introduce babies and toddlers to the library: never too early!

Genealogy Group

If you are interested in exploring your family history, it’s well worthwhile joining the Genealogy Group.

Meeting at the Library every Friday between 12 noon and 1pm, it’s run by the U3A (University of the Third Age) and therefore to join the group you must be a U3A member.

For further information please visit Kinver’s local group at www.u3asites.org.uk/kinver or contact Denise Geoghegan on 01384 877450. Membership costs £20 per annum but that allows you to take advantage of all the Kinver U3A group’s other activities as well.

As researching via the internet is a crucial aspect of this interesting hobby, membership of the Genealogy Group allows free access to one of the UK’s largest ancestry websites. All four of the library’s free computer terminals are reserved exclusively for this group for the hour.

Knot, Knit & Natter Group with Marie Roberts

A new group run by Marie Roberts will give people the opportunity to socialise and at the same time enjoy the art of knitting and other yarn-based crafts.

There will be no charge for this group, which provides the chance to share skills and learn about different methods. We hope you will join Marie and drink lots of hot drinks instead!

The sessions run on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Bring your own needles and wool!

Book Groups

We currently have two book clubs, meeting on the  2nd Tuesday of the Month during the Day and the 3rd Tuesday of the Month during the Evening.

Both book groups have expressed an interest in widening their current activities from just discussing individual books at their sessions, to actively seeking authors from our wider geographical area to visit us and talk about their past published work, their success and failures and their future writing. A potential list of potential speakers is requested from book group members.

There will also be regular talks by invited authors.

Computer Courses

Whether we like it or not, much of modern life revolves around computers and being online. Do you feel that you need to get to grips with technology but don’t know where to start? Or do you perhaps know the basics but wish to gain in confidence and take it to the next level?

We are offering Computer Courses using our public access PCs, or you may bring along your laptop or tablet if you prefer. A Beginners’ course runs each Tuesday afternoon from 2.00 to 3.30pm with Craig de Mott, and an Advanced course twice a month on Wednesdays from 2.00 to 3.30pm with Jennifer Metcalfe (please see “What’s On” on the Home Page for exact dates).

Both user-friendly courses cost £3 per session and you should reserve a place by phoning us on 01384 872348.

Family History Group

Hosted by Jenny Metcalfe these sessions will take place on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month, 11 am to 12.30 pm.

Groups to a maximum of 8 will be held, using the 4 library public computers and a further 4 participants using their own laptops (iPads or similar computer tablets are not recommended for this purpose). Bookings are essential but any level of experience is welcome.

The group will have free access to www.ancestry.co.uk and other indispensable online resources during the sessions. A fee of £2 per session will be charged for this group.

Please register your interest for this group with your friendly volunteers or contact Jenny Metcalfe for more information at jenniferametcalfe@yahoo.co.uk
